I don’t remember the first time I watched “Let’s Scare Jessica To Death”, but I’m sure it was a late Saturday night when I was a kid. I do know that I’ve watched it dozens of times ever since, and it never gets old. From the mood-setting opening piano notes, the whispers in the achingly beautiful cemetery, the cinematography, it all starts deliciously slowly and builds a kind of suspense you rarely see in movies today. Jessica has just been released from a mental hospital. Her husband Duncan, has spent their entire savings on an old farmhouse in Connecticut. With their friend Woody, they plan to run an apple farm. Upon arrival at the old house, they find a mysterious transient–Emily–living there. After that, things get spooky and weird. One of my favorite scenes is when Emily sings–“Stay Forever”–at the dinner table. It’s eerie in both melody and lyrics, which seem to match what’s happening to Jessica before her eyes. Are these things real, or is Jessica slipping into insanity once again? Y’all check this movie out! Trust me.
